Idea4MI in collaborazione con l’associazione culturale LAQ – lartquotidien è lieta di accogliere nei propri spazi a partire dal 19 ottobre le opere dell’artista americana SUSAN COOPER per la prima volta in Italia.
Nata a Los Angeles nel 1947 SUSAN COOPER è un’artista con una importantissima carriera artistica alle spalle, conosciuta per i suoi grandi lavori d’arte pubblica, visibili in Colorado, California, Alaska, St. Lewis e Florida.
Alla galleria di via Lanzone 23 l’artista presenta il progetto site specific, recentemente esposto anche in una galleria in New Mexico: A RE ARRANGEMENT, un’installazione murale che va a connettere gli spazi, realizzata con la carta recuperata da cartoline, brochure e libri delle sue precedenti mostre. Un mosaico vivo di esperienze e memorie vibranti di lavori passati e recenti che si concretizza in forme circolari di vari pattern colorati che ci appaiono come fiori stilizzati o complessi macchinari fantastici. Un’esplorazione del mondo da un punto di vista femminile che raggiunge lo spettatore in modo gioioso e giocoso, incorporando immagini che vengono ri composte come colorati ripensamenti. Emerge l’attenzione al recupero dei materiali nonché la sublimazione del passato sotto forma di diario condiviso. Dall’esperienza personale alla pratica artistica, la riorganizzazione dei vari materiali è “come un rituale catartico” scrive Lucy R. Lippard’s, a proposito della sua installazione RECOLLECTION. Nei suoi lavori è evidente il suo interesse per l’architettura e la storia.
Per l’artista: “Il processo artistico serve come bussola per determinare ed esplorare il nostro posto nel mondo. È un fulcro che collega il mondo fisico con le idee, la memoria e la visione”.
Sebbene in un interno, l’installazione contiene tutta la carica dell’opera pubblica realizzata per essere immediatamente apprezzata e capita da tutti, a ricordarci che l’arte non è e non deve essere solamente un privilegio per pochi, così come dettavano i principi che il Federal Art Project diffondeva negli anni ’30 in America.
Susan Cooper è nata a Los Angeles. Ha frequentato dal 1968 al 1970 l’Università di Berkeley in California studiando arte, antropologia e pittura. Dopo due anni in New Mexico, si è trasferita appena fuori Denver, a Cherry Hills Village, dove ha adibito un ex fienile a studio.
Dal 1990 il suo lavoro si indirizza nella realizzazione di grandi opere d’arte pubblica realizzati con diverse tipologie di materiali plastici come cemento, legno, vetro, acciaio, rame e supporti per la pittura. Le installazioni si trovano in università, ospedali, università, college e scuole, parchi, musei come il Denver Art Museum, il Museo dell’Olocausto di Los Angeles, il Jewish Museum a Chmielnik in Polonia, il Kirkland Museum of Fine and Decorative Art, Roswell Museum and the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art, ma anche in teatri, un’armeria, stazioni di polizia, municipi, sistemi e stazioni di trasporto, un garage e in diverse collezioni private. Nel 2022 il Curtis Center for the Arts (Denver, Colorado) le dedica una retrospettiva in cui viene presentata la produzione dell’artista dall’inizio della sua carriera fino a oggi.

Starting on October 19th Idea4MI in collaboration with the cultural association LAQ – lartquotidien is pleased to welcome in its spaces the works of American artist Susan Cooper for the first time in Italy.
Born in Los Angeles in 1947 Susan Cooper is an artist with a significant artistic career behind her, known for her large public art works in Colorado, California, Alaska, St. Lewis and Florida.
In via Lanzone 23, the artist presents her site-specific project, already exhibited in several art spaces in the U.S., most recently in New Mexico: RE ARRANGING / RI COMPONENDO, a mural installation that connects spaces, made with paper recovered from postcards, brochures, and books from her previous exhibitions.A living mosaic of experiences and vibrant memories of previous and current work, that take the form of circular shapes of various coloured patterns that appear as stylized flowers, but also as complex fantastical machinery. An exploration of the world from a feminine point of view that reaches the viewers joyfully and playfully along with serious images that are redesigned as colorful afterthoughts, in which the focus on the recovery of materials emerges alongside the sublimation of the past in the form of a shared diary. As Lucy R. Lippard wrote about her installation RECOLLECTION, from personal experience to artistic practice, Susan Cooper’s reorganization of various materials is ‘like a cathartic ritual’. Her interest in architecture and history are evident in her works.
In the artist’s words: ‘The artistic process serves as a compass to determine and explore our place in the world. It is a fulcrum that connects the physical world with ideas, memory and vision’.
Although in an interior space, the installation contains all the charge of a public work made to be immediately appreciated and understood by all, reminding us that art is not and must not be just a privilege for the few, as dictated by the principles that the Federal Art Project propagated in the 1930s in America.
Susan Cooper was born in Los Angeles. She attended the University of California Berkeley as an undergrad and graduate student until 1970, studying art and anthropology. After two years in New Mexico, she moved just outside Denver to Cherry Hills Village, where she converted a former barn into a studio.
Since 1990, her work has been directed towards the creation of large public art works made from different types of plastic materials, concrete, wood, glass, steel, copper, and painting media. The installations can be found in universities, hospitals, parks, museums such as the Denver Art Museum, the Holocaust Museum in Los Angeles, the Jewish Museum in Chmielnik in Poland, the Kirkland Museum of Fine and Decorative Art, Roswell Museum and the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art, as well as in theatres, hospitals universities, colleges and schools, police stations, city halls, transport systems and stations, a garage, an armory, and in various private collections. In 2022, the Curtis Center for the Arts (Denver, Colorado) has dedicated a retrospective to her, presenting the artist’s production from the beginning of her career to the present day.
